More Effects of Substance Abuse

Substance abuse can and does kill people every day. A person can succumb to alcohol poisoning, take an overdose, get some bad “stuff”, anything can happen. For teens, substance abuse can affect their growth, their grades, their mental ability. They can become withdrawn, hostile and end up losing out on many wonderful memory making opportunities by missing out on school events, sports, dances. Depression and Substance Abuse

Substance Abuse Definition

While there is no universally accepted definition of the term substance abuse, there are guidelines which aid in the diagnosis. Basically, it is the use of harmful drugs or alcohol with the knowledge that it is harmful. A person who tries Oxycontin, just to try it even though they know it can be harmful, is abusing a substance. They are not necessarily addicted but they may continue to use it knowing the dangers of the substance.
